Sweet and aromatic, aniseeds are similar in many ways to fennel seeds. Traditionally used in European cooking in breads and cakes. Also used as a crucial flavouring in the anise-scented drinks of Southern Europe such as pastis, raki or ouzo. I was told recently by a customer at a market that the aniseeds are a superb repellant for ants - bet you didn't know that, i certainly didn't!
