The company, named after a Madagascan town in the heart of the vanilla growing region, was started by James Ransome in September 2003 as a part-time venture while he was finishing a degree at the University of Bath. His background as a chef in some of the top restaurants in the UK and Australia together with plenty of time spent wandering aimlessly around India and South-East Asia led to a real interest in, and appreciation for, good food and faraway places. A walk around the markets of Marrakesh provided the moment of realisation that the scent, flavour, history and just sheer romance of the spice trade with all the evocative countries and markets involved, was something he loved and wanted to be involved in. As the company has grown from supplying one restaurant and James's mum, to supplying some of the finest restaurants and chefs in the country, that initial passion has increased as we've learnt more and found that the subject is more vast than we could ever have imagined at first. We remain committed to sourcing the finest ingredients from around the world and blending them in small batches to maximise the intensity of flavour and magical scent of our spices.
